Areca is one of the important commercial crops grown in Holalkere. The crop is cost intensive and the market is highly fluctuating. In such a situation SKDRDP in association with NABARD under Livelihood & Entrepreneurship Development Program (LEDP) has motivated farm women to get regular income by imparting entrepreneur skills to produce Areca Leaf plates.
Objective and key activities
The main objective of the program is to provide livelihood to Self-Help Group (SHG) members by imparting entrepreneur skills. The program included imparting training to 90 matured SHG members of of Holalkere taluk, Chitradurga. The main activities included training, credit support, purchase of machineries/ inputs and marketing of the products. NABARD has sanctioned a grant assistance of Rs.2.61 lakhs to conduct the LEDP.
SKDRDP and NABARD have motivated 90 SHG members of Holalkere taluk and successfully implemented the LEDP to adopt entrepreneur skill to produce areca leaf plates. In the I Phase 27 members invested Rs.14.85 lakhs to produce areca leaf plates. They used 10” and 12” machine dyes and produced 1.55 lakh plates with a turnover of Rs.2.87 lakhs . Members could sell the plates in the vicinity, Chitradurga and Belgaum with the help of SIRI.
