The Sri Kotilingeshwara Chakli Unit in Hebri Taluk of Dakshina Kannada District is an inspiring example of family unity, entrepreneurship, and self-reliance. At a time when joint families are gradually becoming less common, eight members of a single family — parents, three sons, and their daughters-in-law, with active leadership and dedication from Smt,Vasanthi and Smt, Harinakshi — have come together to run the enterprise.
What began as a small-scale chakli-making unit has successfully grown over the past seven years, with its hygienically prepared and tasty chakli gaining considerable demand in Hebri and across the district.
The loan and guidance provided by SKDRDP have played an important role in establishing and strengthening the enterprise. With this support, the family has been able to develop the unit into a sustainable source of livelihood. The enterprise has also created employment opportunities for around 20 local people, extending its benefits beyond the family and contributing to local livelihood generation.
The unit places strong emphasis on quality, health, and hygiene. Chakli is prepared using machinery and fried using traditional methods. Used cooking oil is never reused, and strict hygiene is maintained throughout the production and packaging processes. The Sri Kotilingeshwara Chakli Unit stands as a testimony to how family cooperation, women-led enterprise development, and timely financial support can create sustainable livelihoods while generating valuable employment within the local community.
